Furniture as Functional Art — The Spun Chair

Designed by Thomas Heatherwick for Magis, the Spun Chair challenges conventional ideas about seating. Simultaneously sculpture, chair, rocker, and spinning top, it transforms a familiar object into an interactive experience.

What makes the design enduring is its ability to change behavior. Rather than encouraging stillness, it invites movement, curiosity, and play. At rest, it appears as a striking sculptural form. In motion, it offers a new perspective on how we engage with furniture and the spaces around us.

Introduced in 2010 and recipient of the Compasso d'Oro Award, the Spun Chair remains one of the clearest examples of furniture as functional art.
